Ben Curran is a left-handed opening batter who qualified for and now represents Zimbabwe. Craig Ervine, when selected, brings the most experience of anyone in the batting group. A left-hander and long-serving captain across formats, his role in T20 is usually to anchor at three if the openers go early.

Middle order and finishers

Ryan Burl is Zimbabwe's designated middle-order hitter and one of the few players in world cricket whose most famous moment involved a plea for better kit sponsorship on social media. On the field, he is a left-handed batter who clears the ropes from ball one and bowls leg-spin — a combination that makes him unusually valuable in a side that needs both. He is the player most likely to change the shape of an innings in three overs.

Sean Williams is the senior professional: a left-handed batter with a long international career who bowls left-arm orthodox spin and is trusted in the middle overs with both bat and ball. Players with his years of service are rare in a side that has had significant turnover.

Tashinga Musekiwa and other emerging batters have been rotated through the middle order as Zimbabwe builds depth. Selection in this band changes series to series.

The all-rounders

In short: a right-handed batter who can bat anywhere from three to seven, an off-spinner who bowls in every phase, and a player with more elite T20 experience than most of the rest of the squad combined.

Dion Myers is a right-handed batting all-rounder who bowls off-spin — a Zimbabwean player who came through the domestic system and the Zimbabwe A pathway. He is the sort of squad member who covers two roles at once, which matters when a touring party is small.

Brad Evans and Faraz Akram represent the seam-bowling all-rounder option: useful overs with the ball plus lower-order hitting. Every T20 side wants at least one of these; Zimbabwe has usually carried two.

Wicketkeeping options

Clive Madande has been the specialist wicketkeeper-batter in recent squads, with Marumani providing a keeping option at the top of the order. Carrying a batter who can keep is one of the quiet advantages in T20 selection: it lets a captain play an extra bowler without leaving the gloves to someone unsuited to them.

The pace attack

Blessing Muzarabani is Zimbabwe's spearhead and, at well over two metres tall, one of the tallest bowlers in international cricket. That height produces steep bounce from a good length, which is awkward on any surface and particularly on slow ones where batters expect the ball to sit up. He is a new-ball bowler who is also used at the death.

Richard Ngarava is a left-arm quick — the angle across the right-hander is a genuine tactical asset, and left-arm pace is scarce enough that most sides plan specifically for it. Tendai Chatara brings swing and control with the new ball, and Trevor Gwandu and other seamers have rotated through the squad.

A tall right-armer plus a left-armer is a deliberately awkward new-ball combination, and it is the most underrated part of Zimbabwe's T20 make-up.

The spin department

Zimbabwe rarely picks a large number of specialist spinners because so many of its batters bowl. Raza's off-spin, Williams's left-arm orthodox, Burl's leg-spin, Bennett's off-spin and Myers's off-spin can, between them, cover most of the middle overs without a dedicated slot. Wellington Masakadza, a left-arm spinner, is the specialist option when conditions call for one.

Two names Indian fans keep confusing

Dion Myers is not Kyle Mayers. This is the most common mix-up in search. Dion Myers is a Zimbabwean batting all-rounder who bowls off-spin. Kyle Mayers is a West Indies all-rounder — a different player, from a different country, with a different spelling of the surname. If you are reading a profile that mixes their records together, it is wrong.

Ben Curran is not Sam or Tom Curran. Ben is a left-handed opening batter representing Zimbabwe. Sam and Tom Curran are his brothers and play for England. All three are sons of the late Kevin Curran, who played international cricket for Zimbabwe — which is the family connection behind the story and the reason the surname keeps appearing in two different national squads. Any article attributing an England all-rounder's record to Zimbabwe's opener has conflated the brothers.

Why Zimbabwe's T20 side is better than its reputation

Zimbabwe is a Full Member nation with a long, complicated cricket history, and Indian coverage tends to treat the team as an afterthought. That underrates them for three specific reasons.

Franchise-league exposure. Several Zimbabwean players have been regulars in T20 leagues around the world. That is a different kind of education from playing only bilateral cricket — it means experience of pressure finishes, of playing alongside and against elite internationals, and of the data-driven preparation those leagues run on.

Squad balance. The bowling-all-rounder structure described above gives Zimbabwe more tactical options than a side with five specialist bowlers, particularly on used pitches where match-ups matter more than raw pace.

T20 compresses gaps. Twenty overs is a short enough format that a good bowling spell or a brief burst of hitting decides matches. That is why the format has produced far more surprising results than Test cricket ever has, and it is why treating any international side as a formality is a mistake.
